Delhi court to deliver verdict on CBI’s application on Bofors case

Saturday, 24.10.2009, 09:29am (GMT)

New Delhi, Oct 24 : The long pending cases against Italian businessman Ottavio Quatrochhi may come to an end on Saturday as the Delhi Court is expected to deliver its verdict on the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) application.

On October 3, the CBI had formally moved an application seeking permission to withdraw all cases against Quattrocchi the prime accused in the 64 crore Bofors scam.

Earlier on September 29 the Union Law ministry had informed the Supreme Court about its decision to withdraw cases against Quattrochhi.

In its submission before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja, the CBI argued that publicity and politics have no role to play in such matters and requested the court to reject the private party’s plea against the CBI''s move to close the case.

The CBI had said it had arrived at this conclusion after its failure to get Quattrochhi extradited twice from Malaysia and Argentina to face trial.

The CBI claimed that the plea to withdraw the case was filed in good faith and in public interest.

Quattrocchi is the sole surviving accused in the two-decade-old case after the Delhi High Court quashed the charges against other accused on May 31, 2005.
