CPM patriarch Jyoti Basu dead

Sunday, 17.01.2010, 07:37am CPIM patriarch and former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu passed way at 11.47 am on Sunday after see-sawing for 17 days between life and death. He was 95.

The official announcement of his death was made by a weeping Left Front chairman Biman Bose today. Basu had been admitted to the AMRI hospital in the city's Salt Lake neighbourhood with severe pneumonia on January 1.


Jyoti Basu was critically ill. On Saturday evening, Siddhartha Shankar Ray, Prakash and Brinda Karat, Somnath Chatterjee and Amitabh Bachchan shared moments at room 827 of AMRI Hospitals, Salt Lake, where Basu lay in an extremely critical state after multi-organ failure set in.
