Equity markets fall at opening bell

Mumbai, Dec 24 Indian equity markets opened lower Wednesday with a key index falling more than 110 points below Tuesday's close, about 15 minutes into trading.

The sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened the day at 9,626.07 points, against Tuesday's close at 9,686.75 points. About 15 minutes after opening, it had fallen further to 9,576.45 points, 110.30 points or 1.14 percent lower than its previous close.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader S&P CNX Nifty index followed the Sensex, losing 0.83 percent to be at 2,944.10 points at the same time.

The midcap and smallcap indices of the BSE were also in the red.
